Matt delivers a unique blend of styles he calls “Blue-eyed Soul“.  Not just a singer, this musician builds guitar playing and heartfelt lyrics into songs that light up the soul. “It makes life better when we can laugh and dance together”, says Matt.

From churches to coffeehouses, from living rooms to Nashville theaters, Matt brings down the house.  He has played for Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Fours Tops, The Drifters, The Tommy Dorsey Big Band and he has toured Europe with the Continental Brass & Singers.  A frequent guest in Memphis, Matt has appeared at the W.C. Handy Blues Awards and the King Biscuit Blues Festival.  He has performed at B.B. King’s Blues Club and recorded at the House of Blues recording studio in Memphis, as well.

But in the end it’s not the fancy venues that draw Matthew, it’s the people.

About Matt

Matt Blagg's story is one of resilience, self-discovery, and the transformative power of music. Born and raised on a farm in Western Oklahoma, Matt's earliest memories are steeped in the rich tapestry of rural life and the melodic strains of his father's guitar. These formative experiences—the smell of fresh-cut hay, the thump of a kick drum during soundcheck, and the camaraderie of musicians—would shape Matt's musical journey and worldview for years to come.

As a young boy, Matt often found himself in the corner of smoky venues, soaking in the atmosphere as his father's band played. These nights, ending with Matt being carried home asleep, planted the seeds of a lifelong passion. The pivotal moment came when Matt won the Geary talent show singing "Wabash Cannonball," a clear sign of the path that lay ahead.

At 23, newly married and feeling the deep burn of musical ambition, Matt made the bold decision to leave his job at a travel company. With no safety net and a young family to support, he dove headfirst into the unpredictable world of professional music. This leap of faith meant trading rush hour traffic for long nights on the road, often driving a 20-year-old van to gigs across the country.

The early years were a testament to Matt's grit and determination. He lived the life of a bohemian artist, facing financial struggles, vehicle breakdowns, and the constant challenge of balancing family life with his career. Yet, these hardships only fueled his creativity and deepened his connection to his craft.

Matt's musical style, rooted in country undertones, has evolved over the years, influenced by a diverse range of experiences and collaborations. From playing with Smilin' Vic and the Soul Monkeys to recording sessions that spanned genres, Matt's sound became a unique blend of country, soul, and rhythm & blues. His decision to stay true to his roots, even when pop was the trend, speaks to his authenticity as an artist.

Collaborations with world class songwriters like LG Brown, Stacy Barton,  and Nashville songwriters such as  the legendary Verlon Thompson and Jeff Ferguson have helped Matt hone his songwriting skills. He strives to create music that connects deeply with listeners, aiming to "grab them by the heart" with every lyric and melody.

Over the years, Matt's voice has matured, gaining a rougher edge that lends credibility to his performances. As he puts it, his voice now "has some road on it," making his delivery more believable and impactful. This evolution mirrors his personal growth, as Matt continues to approach the world with wide-eyed wonder, balancing a writer's observant eye with a perpetual youthful spirit.

Despite the challenges—including self-doubt and the constant pressure to prove himself—Matt remains committed to his artistic vision. His music is a vehicle for spreading hope, love, and kindness, bringing people together in a world that often feels divided.

Today, Matt Blagg stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring appeal of authentic musicianship. Whether performing in intimate venues or larger halls, he continues to connect with audiences through his soulful performances and heartfelt lyrics. Matt's journey from a farm boy with a dream to a seasoned performer with "road on his voice" is not just a personal triumph, but an inspiration to aspiring musicians everywhere.

As he looks to the future, Matt remains dedicated to creating original music that reflects his experiences and touches the lives of others. In every note and every lyric, Matt Blagg carries forward the legacy of his roots, the lessons of the road, and the enduring power of music to unite and uplift.
